When
you have a fish pond it is nice to have some place to sit and feed the fishes,
watch them swim and watch the butterflies and dragonflies. The problem is
that when you have a pond that is supposed to look natural, a regular
bench or seat does not look right because it looks too man-made. So when I
made my large pond I created two stone benches that are not geometrically
shaped, in fact they almost look like two piles of rocks but they are actually
fairly comfortable to sit on.

This
is the Right bench, click on it for a larger version. A few months before
I made these benches I saw a girl and a guy sitting on a bench at a water garden
and I noticed that they were not using much space on the bench because they were
sitting so closely. After seeing that, I designed my benches so that the
width is equal to the width of two normal people sitting side by side
with no space between them. I refer to this design concept as "forced
closeness" or "forced intimacy."
